Rice FAQs

What is the difference between polished and unpolished rice?

Unpolished rice is rice that has only its husk (ipa) removed. The bran (the outer skin of the rice) where rice gets its color (brown, red, black), remain intact. Polished rice or white rice is fully milled rice fully. The bran has been polished off already, exposing the inner core.

In terms of nutrition and health benefits, unpolished rice is better than polished rice because the bran is where all the benefits are such as a good portion of fiber, multivitamin B’s and more.

While polished rice or white rice has a generous portion of carbohydrates which supports those who practice an active lifestyle and need more energy.

How do you cook rice?

For white or polished rice:

  • Rinse rice thoroughly
  • 1 cup of rice to 1 cup of water
  • Bring to a boil until cooked

For unpolished rice (Brown, Red, Black)

  • Rinse rice thoroughly
  • Soak rice in water for a minimum of 30 minutes or even overnight
  • Cook 1 cup of rice with 1.5 cup of water

How do you store rice?

Store rice in an air-tight container.

For organic unpolished rice, its best to use immediately as storing for more than 3-6 months make it prone to rice weevil or “bukbok”. Though it’s not harmful to eat, you can get rid of the weevils by placing the rice under the sun until all weevils are gone.
